Iconic Sri Lankan Spices

Coriander

Coriander is a member of the parsley (Apiaceae) family. It’s an annual plant that grows on slender green stems. The plant can grow up to three feet tall and the leaves resemble parsley leaves. When coriander flowers, it produces white flowers, with a hint of purple, and round, light brown seeds.

Cardamom

Cardamom, also known as Cardamon, is a small spindle shaped seedpod with black seeds inside. The covers are thin and pale green (Elettaria) or dark brown (Amomum). It is the third on the list of the world’s most expensive spices, right behind vanilla and saffron.

Cumin

Cumin is a spice made from the dried seed of a plant known as Cuminum cyminum, which is a member of the parsley family. Cumin is one of the most popular spices and is commonly used in Latin American, Middle Eastern, North African, and Indian cuisines, among many others. It is available both as whole seeds as well as in ground form.

Mace

Nutmeg is the seed of a type of evergreen tree (Myristica fragrans), while mace is the reddish netlike covering surrounding the seed. Nutmeg and mace are used as a flavouring for many sweet dishes from the cuisines of various countries, and as a spice in many savoury dishes.

Black Pepper

One of the most consumed spices in the world, Pepper, the fruit of the plant Piper nigrum is native to the Indian state, Kerala. Even though Sri Lanka caters to merely 2.5% of the global demand for pepper, Ceylon Pepper is rich in Piperine, which gives Ceylon Pepper its distinct pungency and a premium price in the global market driven by its plenitude of the alkaloid.

Brindleberry

Sri Lankan Brindleberry, a hidden gem in the world of exotic fruits! Also known as Garcinia Cambogia, our Brindleberry boasts a unique sweet and tangy flavor profile, adding a tropical twist to your culinary adventures.
